Meet Dave: Tricerat's Technology Explorer

Learn about Dave and the cool stuff he’s working on in this week’s employee profile.

Meet Dave, he’s a Senior Software Developer on our research and development team here at Tricerat. Dave is a self-proclaimed technology explorer who works every day to find new technologies to incorporate into our software solutions. He has been with the Tricerat team for more than three years and is responsible for a lot of the technology you see in our printing and TX products. Dave came to Tricerat with a development background in gaming, contributing to games like Civilization and working with industry pros like Sid Meier. He will tell you he fell in love with computers in the 90’s— and we're sure glad he did.

His passion for technology keeps us miles ahead of anyone else in our industry. Dave is one of the most dynamic people we have here at Tricerat. Aside from his love for new technology and innovation, he’s also a trained classical guitarist with a background from the prestigious Peabody Institute in Baltimore.

What do you do at Tricerat?

I am a creative programmer. In short, I am responsible for finding and testing technologies and prototypes that can then be integrated into our software. I’m looking for solutions and elements that can make our products better. We're looking for cutting-edge stuff that hasn't been done before. For example, we just finished integrating Google Cloud Support. It’s a fun job, I look forward to coming to work every day.

Any recent accomplishments?

My son just graduated from college. I’m proud of him, but excited to be done paying for school.

Three items on or around your desk…

I like to keep a clean desk, so right now I see my lunchbox, pictures of my kids, a cigar humidor, and a few USB devices that I am working on testing.

Despite having a very clean office, we also spotted a few Baltimore Orioles and Ravens bobble heads. “I’m a big Orioles and Ravens fan,” he told us. So much so that he is planning to attend next week’s game where they are giving out Buck Showalter garden gnomes to the first 25,000 fans.

The first device I reach for in the morning…

My mandolin. I have played every morning for 30 or 40 years.

After arriving at Tricerat in the morning, my first stop is…

I get right to work. I love my job. It’s hard to pull yourself away from doing work you truly enjoy. My work is like playing a chess game, every move is strategic and it’s exciting to see what’s going to happen next. I love the people here, this company is just different. It’s by far my favorite place to work.

What was your largest milestone with the company?

The ‘ah, ha’ moment I had when I finally understood what the technical teams were talking about.

What’s your favorite aspect of Tricerat technology?

I get a charge when I push a button and the test page comes out of the printer. I love when things work the way they're supposed to, especially when QA is testing my product.

Which Tricerat product is your favorite?

I'd have to say Simplify Printing TX, it’s amazing what it can do. The whole ‘print from anywhere, any time’ concept really does work. I've become really good at printing. Ask my wife.

If you could have dinner with three people (dead or alive), whom would you invite?
  • Sid Meier – we have been meaning to get together.
  • Django Reinhardt – a gypsy guitarist who only had two fingers to play with (the others were paralyzed in a fire).
  • My wife – She’s a huge influence on my life; I have known her since I was fifteen. We're high school sweethearts.
Famous last words?

If it can go wrong, it will. I like to apply Murphy’s Law to my work at Tricerat, that way we have all of the bases covered.
